When do bridges need jacking?
Most bridge jacking is planned: lifting the deck to replace seized bearings, install strengthening works, or carry out repairs and re-levelling.
Some work isn’t planned, and after a bridge strike, jacking is often a key part of getting the route reopened quickly and safely.
We support bearing replacement, strengthening and emergency works across highways and rail.
Controlled and synchronised bridge jacking
Bridges are lifted in small, synchronised increments, with hydraulic jacks working together so the structure stays level throughout.
Low height jacks work within the limited headroom beneath a deck, and heavy duty propping holds the structure safely while works are carried out. All of this can be hired from Mabey Hire.
This can often be done with the bridge remaining open to traffic, and structural monitoring watches the structure for the duration.

Often, yes. Because the structure is lifted in small, synchronised increments, many bridges can remain open under traffic management during the works. Whether that’s possible depends on the structure and the scope, which our engineers assess at design stage.
The lift itself is usually fairly quick. However, the overall programme is driven by the works underneath. Times can vary depending on th bearing replacement or strengthening, and by access arrangements like road closures or rail possessions.
