Junction 19 of the M1, which is located on the boundary between the counties of Leicestershire and Northamptonshire, is important for north/south and east/west traffic movements across the UK. Over 150,000 vehicles pass through the existing junction daily causing congestion and delays, particularly during peak travel periods. Work started in January 2014 to improve the junction and related sections of the M1 and M6 motorways, and the A14 trunk road with the intention of relieving the congestion and improving road safety. This will be achieved by adding a number of bridges, underpasses and new exit and access slip roads.

Mabey was contacted by Skanska to supply two sets of specialist equipment capable of taking high loads over large spans.

The first excavation, where a bridge foundation is due to be built, required a frame to support a 7.7m deep, sheet-piled cofferdam with very high loads of over 130kN/m and a plan size of 22.1m x 11.1m. The engineers at Mabey provided Supershaft Plus and Super Shaftbrace frames, supported by our Super Bracing Struts. This part of the project was completed in April 2015.

The second excavation required three sided support for the side of the M1 whilst construction work was carried out below and alongside the live motorway. The support needed was 23.3m x 10m x 10m in size and through our own temporary works engineers; we were able to provide Super Shaftbrace frames supported by Super Bracing Struts used for bracing and propping the frame. This part of the project is due to be completed in August 2015.

Mabey’s engineers provided the best possible system to compare with structural steel in price, and all equipment was provided with a very short lead time without the need for on-site fabrication, which allowed ease of installation.

Tom Curran, Structures Sub-Agent and Temporary Works Co-ordinator at Skanska, comments: “Mabey worked with our site team and temporary works department to provide a viable solution which met our design requirements and site constraints. They were able to supply all equipment within a tight timeframe and provided us with technical support during the installation of the systems.”
